While out grocery shopping, meek, middle-aged Samuel Smith and family pet Rover are run over by a speeding car. Fortunately for them, an ambulance shows up right away. Unfortunately for them, the ambulance attendant mistakenly treats Sam with dog plasma and Rover with human plasma. Both immediately recover - after which Sam starts erupting into bouts of dog-like behavior and Rover begins walking and talking like a human being, much to the consternation of the people around them, especially Sam's wife, Margaret.

Oddly enough for a Roach comedy the premise of MIXED NUTS is grounded in topical political satire aimed at the New Deal, although the satire is of a very lightweight (and light-hearted) nature. The film begins at a city council meeting where an unidentified politician announces that the government has released $50,000 for the relief of unemployed plumbers. This prompts applause, but also a pointed question from an angry woman who wants to know what the government is going to do for the members of her profession: chorus girls. The politician glibly replies that the administration has set aside money—two million dollars, no less!—for the re-education of chorus girls, "to fit them for the better things in life."

Three couples are followed as they struggle to have children. Pilar and Brad Coleman are both very mature, Brad already has grown up a daughter and Pilar wants to have a baby of her own. Diana and Andy Douglas are a newlywed couple with great careers. It would be difficult for Diana to conceive, so they explore other options, like surrogacy and adoption.Charlie Winwood is an orphan who, like Diana, always wanted to have children. He is married to Barbie, an aspiring actress who isn't too enthusiastic to become a mother.
